Volunteer in Nepal
Volunteering in a developing country can be challenging, but an extremely rewarding and life changing experience as it was for the founders of Sunrise Children’s Association Inc (SCAI). Nepal is a country which is different from Australia in many ways. The culture, the traditions, the beliefs and the warmth of the Nepalese people open your eyes to so many things and with mutual respect, an open mind and a willingness to learn as much as teach, will make for an unforgettable experience.
SCAI warmly invites volunteers from abroad to work at our local community school, in the village of Gurje, Nuwakot. For the last 25 years this little village school ran classes from year 1-8 in Nepali curriculum and had only very basic facilities provided by the government. Since partnering with the local school in 2012 SCAI has facilitated the addition of classes up to year 10 (SLC) in Nepali curriculum, as well as adding a whole new English curriculum from Nursery to class 10 (in a whole new block built by SCAI) and added several new, qualified teachers. The school now has almost 250 students, of which around 50 are from Sunrise’s childrens home, located nearby.
Our aim is to develop the school to private school standard to give the poor children in Gurje and surrounding villages the opportunity to have a good education without having to leave their home and go to Kathmandu and be separated from their families.
With the all new English curriculum (which is being encouraged by the government but without any extra government resources available), there are great opportunities for skilled people to join our school team and really help make a difference to the lives of these children.
Whilst English tuition both for the teachers and students, creative teaching methods and expertise in Early Childhood Development have been requested by the school in particular, there are numerous different skills that volunteers can bring, from teaching sports (e.g. soccer, basketball, badminton, volleyball and table tennis), to computing, art, photography, sewing, woodwork, drama and music. Importantly we are looking for people who are qualified in their area of interest and will be able to do at least one of the following:
- Conduct teacher training (including things like how to teach more creatively, how to deal with special needs children and children with different abilities)
- Provide English language tuition for staff and children
- Work alongside our local pre-school teachers to help develop Montessori style methods
- Run extra-curricular activities during term and/or camps in school
Volunteering opportunities are available from a minimum of three weeks. Volunteers must be at least 25 years old. Volunteers younger than this will be considered on a case by case basis if they have special skills and qualifications needed. See below links for more information.
