Volunteer in Nepal
Volunteering in a developing country can be challenging, but an extremely rewarding and life changing experience as it was for the founders of Sunrise Children’s Association Inc (SCAI). Nepal is a country which is different from Australia in many ways. The culture, the traditions, the beliefs and the warmth of the Nepalese people open your eyes to so many things and make for an unforgettable experience.
At Sunrise Orphanage we have around 70 beautiful children who bring so much joy to those around them. Watching the transformation of the children from when they arrive at Sunrise and their ongoing development is just incredible and something that volunteers can be a part of.
In April 2013 Sunrise Orphanage will be moving from its rented premises on the outskirts of Kathmandu to its own permanent home which is currently under construction in our new area of Gurje, Nuwakot. We have merged with the local community school in Gurje and our Sunrise children will be transferring to that school when our new home and the extensions to the school are completed. To enable the local village children to benefit from our volunteers as well as the Sunrise children, our volunteering program will focus on working with the students at the local community school, which includes our Sunrise children, from April 2013, rather than simply at Sunrise Orphanage.
There are numerous different skills that volunteers can bring, from teaching sports (e.g. soccer, basketball, badminton, volleyball and table tennis) as well as things like English, computing, art, photography, sewing, woodwork, drama or music. We are open to your suggestions! We are looking for people who are qualified in their area of interest and will be able to do one of the following:
- Co-teach classes from Nursery to year 10 with local staff
- Conduct teacher training
- Run a camp in school holidays for one of the above mentioned types of activities
We have no doubt the various activities you get involved with as a volunteer will bring you immense joy.
Volunteering opportunities are available from a minimum of three weeks, to a maximum of 12 week placements. Volunteers must be at least 25 years old. See below links for more information.
Before applying to volunteer with Sunrise, please ensure you have carefully read the forms on the above links. If you then meet the criteria and feel this program is for you, please fill in the application form below and send to Sarah Thom at 6/84 Westbury St, St Kilda East, Vic 3183.
