Mission
SCAI is committed to helping alleviate poverty amongst underprivileged children and youth in Nepal and the communities in which they live. Through working in partnership with local communities to provide education, training, development and income generating opportunities, SCAI aims to co-create long term sustainable solutions, with improved standards of living and reduced dependence on external assistance.
Philosophies
Empowerment: We believe the most effective way to make a long-term difference to the underprivileged children and youth of Nepal and the local communities in which they live is to empower them to help themselves.
Through facilitating education, training and development programs for the staff and youth of Sunrise Orphanage and other marginalised groups within the local community, they can acquire the knowledge and skills required to become employable and self-sufficient. Training also involves building awareness of their rights and opportunities and changing attitudes, beliefs and behaviour of the local community towards poverty and the issues that affect them and their children.
Youth as facilitators of change: The children and youth of today are the leaders of the future so we focus the majority of our activities on children and youth, in order to facilitate change in the community at a grass roots level and lead them out of poverty, before they become too deeply entrenched in the common cycle of their forefathers.
Active participation: We primarily respond to needs identified by the local community themselves. We facilitate and provide advice and guidance, whilst encouraging the people within the local community to actively participate in both the development of the projects, the decision making and the on ground implementation, in order to give them a greater sense of ownership, responsibility and sense of achievement. By using local people and local resources in all our projects we further create employment, produce outcomes that are relevant and most meaningful to the local people and are sustainable.
Partnership: SCAI aims to develop partnerships with like-minded, community based, not-for-profit organizations, people and/ or communities in developing countries (currently Nepal) who have clearly identified a genuine need and desire for long-term positive change. We seek partnerships where we can work together to identify and tackle the causes of poverty rather than simply relieving the symptoms, through open, honest, mutually respectful and transparent communication.
Equality: We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, political preference or background. Our projects are conducted with people from various religions, and from many different ethnic groups, both male and female. We are a non-political organization and do not align ourselves with, nor favour those from any particular political background.
- Replicable sustainable solutions: SCAI strives to co-develop sustainable solutions that can be replicated within the local and broader community. We aim to identify and cultivate potential leaders through our youth who can bring about permanent change and produce benefits to the community that are ongoing once our assistance has ceased, then help facilitate the replication of these same sustainable solutions among rural or other needy communities.
